What is rainbow moonstone?

Rainbow moonstone is a variety of labradorite, which is part of the feldspar mineral group. It is often confused with traditional moonstone, which is a variety of orthoclase feldspar; however, rainbow moonstone showcases an iridescent phenomenon known as "adularescence" even more vividly, often displaying a wide range of colors, including blue, pink, yellow, and sometimes green or purple. This play of colors is a result of light scattering within the layered structure of the stone.

Rainbow moonstone is highly valued in the gem and jewelry industries due to its captivating visual effects and is often used in various types of jewelry, including rings, necklaces, and earrings. Originating mainly from Madagascar and India, it is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of around 6 to 6.5, making it somewhat delicate and prone to scratches if not handled properly.

In metaphysical circles, rainbow moonstone is believed to possess soothing and protective qualities, often associated with enhancing intuition, balancing emotions, and promoting clarity of the mind. It is also thought to be a stone that aligns with feminine energies and is often linked to cycles of change and growth, reflecting the symbolic connections many make with the moon itself.
